The Critic (2024)

The sharp tongue and even sharper pen of drama critic Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen) have been employed at The Daily Chronicle for over forty years. He’s able to make or break acting careers with a single sentence, all while carrying on risky dalliances during a time of “gross indecency” laws with hot young men like Alfred Enoch (who puts the “secret” in secretary). But with the death of the paper’s owner and the passing of the torch to his son, David Brooke (Mark Strong), Jimmy’s long-established career is now in jeopardy, especially when rumors of his proclivities start to surface. In order to retain his position, he becomes entangled in a blackmailing scheme involving a young ingénue named Nina Land (Gemma Arterton), who he previously panned and would now do anything to win his favor and further her career. At just under an hour in, Gemma gets out of bed and bares her beautiful backside before sneaking out of the room.
