Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Written and directed by satirical Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, this Palmd’Or winner centers on a young, attractive couple, Carl (Harry Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean Kriek), both models, though Yaya is more successful due to her social media influencer status. In the film’s first act, they begin an argument at a fancy restaurant about money and gender roles that continues into their hotel, where Yaya admits her ultimate goal is to become a rich trophy wife, though Carl is convinced that he can make her love him. We next see them on a luxury cruise that Yaya booked for free in exchange for helping promote it on social media. On the day of the Captain’s dinner, a series of events create a perfect storm - including a literal low pressure system that leads to incredibly rough seas - resulting in utter chaos that ends with the yacht being attacked by pirates and capsizing. A group of survivors end up on an island, where the power dynamic is completely upheaved because only the cruise’s toilet manager Abigail (Dolly De Leon) possesses the skills to survive. Abigail uses this to gain control over the group, including Carl, with whom she begins a sexual affair. The film has Charlbi showing plenty of skin as she lounges in skimpy bikinis and a bit of bare breast when she first gets shipwrecked. Sunnyi Melles also has a slip of the nip while being tossed around in the storm, plus Dolly disrobes to her black bra and panties while rockin’ the boat with Harry. Don’t let the title fool you, you’ll be so happy you took this trip!
