Lewis Carroll’s hallucinogenic tale of tea parties and pills gets an X-rated makeover in Jonas Middleton’s British screen adaptation. A fairy tale to be savored long after the kids are put to bed, Through the Looking Glass (1976) tells of a coldly detached aristocrat (Catherine Erhardt) who escapes her loveless marriage by venturing through her mirror into flashbacks and fantasies involving all manner of sexual depravities. Middleton mixes pornography, arthouse cinema, and shock horror into a mesmerizing psychosexual fever dream. Costars Nancy Dare, Marie Taylor, and Terri Hall are brave enough to join Erhardt for a marathon of debauchery that’s as exotic as it is erotic.
