A pair of boots appears in a field, a ladder mysteriously pops up, and a doubtful young draughtsman starts to wonder if his female boss is hiding secrets about her husband. Such is the mise-en-scène in Peter Greenaway’s critically-acclaimed period piece The Draughtsman’s Contract (1982). Set in rural England circa 1694, the film is part drama, part comedy, part thriller, and totally sexy! That’s because it centers around Mrs Virginia Herbert (Janet Suzman) who hires R. Neville (Anthony Higgins) to whip up twelve elaborate drawings of her estate — and to whip out his John Thomas every time she wants him to sexually service her! While the sketches are meant to be a gift for her absentee spouse, the rest is for the mistress of the house’s libido. After some amorous action, Virginia and Neville lounge around with their clothes half on. In fact, we get to see Ms. Suzman’s bare gams and left mam sitting atop her dress! Alas, the lady quickly tucks it away much to Mr. Skin’s dismay. What seems like a sweet deal turns slightly spooky when Neville starts discovering stray objects in his art studio that weren’t there before. Nevertheless that doesn’t put a damper on his carnal appetite. Yet when Mrs Herbert tires of Mr Neville and tries to terminate their deal, he refuses. The stud also takes on another mistress in the form of Mrs Sarah Talmann (Anne-Louise Lambert) who wants a bun in the oven. Is there anything (or anyone) this draughtsman can’t do?
