Red Sonja (1985)

Red Roses of Passion (1966), Red Light Girls (1974), Angel Guts: Red Porno (1981), Red Heat (1985), Red Blooded American Girl (1990), Red Shoe Diaries: The Movie (1992), Red Silk (1999), Red Velvet (2009), and Red Sparrow (2018). There’s something about the color red that invigorates a film title. That, or the fact that the movie includes some skin. Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t put Red Sonja (1985) on this list. Richard Fleischer’s sword-and-sorcery epic was a star-making vehicle for Brigitte Nielsen. As the title character, the 6’ model wasn’t asked to stretch her acting abilities as much as the fabric on her barely-there costumes. Yes, sometimes a woman swinging a sword is a psychosexual metaphor that embodies all the erotic allure and emasculating menace that combine to create the castration complex. Yet in this case, a blonde bombshell squeezed into a skimpy breastplate — her loins flexing beneath a short skirt of Greek armor as she raises a phallic saber — is nothing more than an excuse to root for a heroine while simultaneously pining to root with her. Meatier of the mounds and sweeter of the face than a mere mortal woman, the fiery female protagonist is a mythical marvel with marvelous mams! Thanks to a wardrobe malfunction, busty Brigitte slips a nip just one minute (and 29 seconds) into the flick! Despite the Golden Raspberry Award nominations for Worst Actress and Worst New Star, Ms. Nielsen rated with Lord Kalidor (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and fans everywhere!
