As hard as it might be to imagine while living in America post-September 11, 2001, patriotism is a powerful feeling for home and country not confined to our borders. As proven by Les Patriotes (1994), a film of French origin, the heart-stirring impulse to subjugate morality, ethics, and the rule of law in the service of one’s beloved native land is a worldwide phenomenon. And what could be more pure than an aspiration that compels a man to devote his heart and his wits to the perseverance of his flag and his fellows? Nothing, unless there is a twist, as there certainly is in Les Patriotes where the protagonist and the antagonist are both called upon to betray the nation of their birth at the behest of a foreign government that claims their souls.
