America’s indigenous peoples were still getting a raw deal in the 1970s. The hero of Johnny Firecloud (1975) is a Native American Vietnam vet who returns from the jungles of Southeast Asia to the mean streets of his hick hometown. Brave Firecloud hopes to bone and breed with the town boss’s pure-hearted blonde daughter. Steps taken to dissuade Johnny Firecloud include lynching his grandpa and murdering a childhood friend who teaches school on the reservation. The movie’s alternate title, The Revenge of Johnny Firecloud, gives a good indication of what happens next.
