Review

Dame Emma Thompson is a brilliant actress who was knighted, in part, because she’s so good at playing real life people on screen. Throughout her esteemed career, the two-time Oscar winner has channeled Catherine of Valois in Henry V (1989), Gareth Peirce in In the Name of the Father (1993), P. L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks (2013), Anna Quangel in Alone in Berlin (2016), Elizabeth I in Upstart Crow (2017), and Dora Carrington in Carrington (1995). Written and directed by Christopher Hampton, the latter flick is a biopic about the titular artist. Based on Lytton Strachey: A Critical Biography, the R-rated film follows painter Dora Carrington (Thompson) and author Lytton Strachey (Jonathan Pryce). He’s gay, and when he first eyes the 17-year-old Dora, he thinks she’s a boy. Needless to say, they have a strange bond. If you think that’s odd, their love story gets weirder since Dora was married to one of Strachey’s lovers. Some could say she was a bit of a slut, despite the fact that she only ever loved one man: Strachey. In fact, they stayed together until he died of stomach cancer, and then the widow killed herself while only in her 30s in 1932. Luckily, we get to see her repeatedly reveal her rack before she goes. Check out Ms. Thompson’s bare breasts in bed, in the lake, and again while having sex standing up! Considering her skin and the tragic tone of the tale, the only one who gets a happy ending is you!
