A zany, irreverent meditation on the rise of alternative lifestyles in Europe, Tag Der Idioten (1982) offers a portrait of an insane asylum that reflects the fringe culture at large. Former Bond girl Carole Bouquet stars as a recent initiate to said asylum, where she’s treated to a banquet of sadomasochism, urination, and all manner of kinky diversions. Director Werner Schroeter depicts his cast as mentally deranged, but a lot of their games look more like good clean fun. Bouquet certainly seems to be enjoying herself, as she frequently ditches her wardrobe for sexy struts in her birthday suit.
