Rive droite, rive gauche (1984)

The French are a demonstratively passionate folk, particularly when they feel they have been put upon and relegated to the position of trampled underdog. The title of Rive droite, rive gauche (1984) translates to Right Bank, Left Bank, directional designations indicating opposite sides of the River Seine, bourgeoisie to the right, bohemians to the left. This comedic drama of a woman whose career is sidetracked by unwanted sexual advances and the corporate lawyer white knight who comes to her rescue is also an exploration of emotionally charged class discrepancies. The right-to-left gallantry does not go off without comical and poignant complications, particularly when the attorney's wife catches wind of his amorous good deeds.
