Phat Beach (1996) takes us back to a time when phat was a positive, a compliment, a hip slang that the streetwise used to differentiate themselves from the squares. Of course, this movie came out about a decade after that, but who cares? It features hefty (not as it trash bag, but overweight) homeboy who borrows his dad’s Mercedes and goes to the beach with his friends for a wild time in the sun. Basically, it’s an “urban” beach film, a race movie, as they were called back at the dawn of cinema. In other words, there’s a black cast for a black audience. But we think this is a comedy that the whole diverse family can enjoy, and that’s not just because everyone’s favorite ex-rapper and current gameshow guest Coolio is in it. There’s also some skin flashed in brief (and briefs and bikinis) from Claudia Kaleem, Nicole Amaral, Tanya Reid, Tamara Nicole Bennett, Glenice Brathwait, Devin De Ray, Panthere and an anonymous volleyball player. As the tagline teases, “Ain’t nothing but a G-string.”
