Last Resort (1986)

A Chicago salesman named George (Charles Grodin) takes his wife (Robin Pearson Rose) and kids (a young Megan Mullally, Scott Nemes, and Christopher Ames) to Club Sand in the comedy Last Resort (1986). Not to be confused with National Lampoon’s Last Resort (1994), the chiller diller The Last Resort (2009), the British drama Last Resort (2000) or the action thriller Last Resort (2023), this pic uses the classic fish-out-of-water tropes to land jokes. Only the fish have huge gills and flash them so much, everybody gets wet! What else would you expect from producer Julie Corman, wife of Roger Corman? Maybe that’s why the film’s titular destination is a swingers’ club! Here, we encounter Jean-Michel (Phil Hartman), Pino (Mario Van Peebles), Dorothy Cocoran (Ellen Blake), and snarky staffers such as the bartender (Jon Lovitz) and Maitre d’ (Ian Abercrombie). At first, only George wants to stay and ogle the gorgeous guests in itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikinis. But soon the whole family is into the fun. Daddy’s little girl (Mullally) hooks up with a young revolutionary, while the eldest son gets laid and the youngest boy learns the joys of voyeurism. Hey kid, welcome to the Skin Central club! Indeed, Mr. Skin can’t get enough views of the nude boobs on Veroneeka (Brenda Bakke). Equally titillating is a scene that shows off the bare back, breasts and butt on Maria (Irina Maleeva). When mom gets into the act, everything is groovy because the family that lays together stays together in this movie!
