Longtime master craftsman Arthur Penn directed this heartfelt chronicle of unconditional love overcoming conditional affection. A quartet of 1950s high-school kids (a Yugoslavian immigrant, his two stalwart wingmen, and the free-loving archetypal liberated chick who has captured the hearts of all three boy-men) is tracked into the turbulent 1960s, through the me-generation of the 1970s, and left at the dawn of the greedy 1980s. Their individual and personal stories encapsulate the plight of the first post-War American generation and put a beating heart into history.
