Review

Cult veteran Javier Aguirre became the first director in post-Franco Spain to earn an S rating (for sexual content) for his lurid feature Carne apaleada (1977). It may not be a Best Picture Oscar, but it’s still a feather in the cap for a fearless sexploitation director. Short on plot, Aguirre’s film follows a young woman’s depraved journey through the Spanish prison system. Accused of robbery, the heroine has no idea about the Sapphic treats and tortures she’ll be subjected to behind bars. Bárbara Rey, Beatriz Rossat, and Esperanza Roy are central to the cast, and you won’t catch them wearing convict stripes. The European skin-cinema veterans shimmy out of their uniforms for some sexing, showering, and more.
