War makes for odd and beautiful bedfellows. In Cal (1984) that strange pairing of apparently incongruent lovers in a battle-torn society extends to the sectarian violence of Northern Ireland. A sensitive, no-nonsense librarian has lost her husband, but a deep well of passion remains, stirring beneath her still, proper surface. A seething man-boy carries a front that is all passionate intensity, but deep inside lurks a still pool of sensitivity. Both these souls need saving. Will boy and woman be able to reach and teach one another before the violence and mayhem swirling all around crashes in and cuts short their chances for redemption?
