When it came time to shoot the sequel to Chinatown (1974), Jack Nicholson took the reigns from Roman Polanski and delivered a sinister crime drama bolstered by an all-star supporting cast. Robert Towne provided the script for this taut period noir about an L.A. private investigator (Nicholson) who’s hired to prove that a client’s wife (Meg Tilly) is committing adultery. The game is muddled considerably when Jake the P.I. is witness to Jake the client (Harvey Keitel) putting a bullet in the head of his business partner. Nicholson’s film isn’t the stone-cold classic that Polanki’s is, but the actor-director does coax fine performances from nearly all of his players, including a sensational looking Madeleine Stowe.
