Real life can be a hot inspiration for skinematic treats, especially when a movie is based on the true exploits of a rich bon vivant who goes slumming with the high-priced sexual demimondaine of 1980s Manhattan. The "cafe" in Cafe Society (1985) refers to a swank bistro that is a front for hookers whose rental fees are higher than the purchase price of a decent, similarly used automobile. The film is stylish, directed by Academy Award winner Raymond DeFelitta, and studded with suggestive settings and circumstances. The wealthy society protagonist faces danger and disgrace as he comes under the spell of a sexy enchantress who has him mystified and ball blinded.
