Decades ago, the box office and spank bank smash hit Shaft (1971) helped spawn the Blaxploitation film movement. Based on Ernest Tidyman’s novel of the same name, the action flick follows John Shaft (Richard Roundtree), a private dick who’d risk his neck for his brother, man. Can you dig it? If those lines sound familiar, they’re from the movie’s Oscar and BAFTA winning tune “Theme from Shaft” by Isaac Hayes which took pop culture by storm. Indeed, it would be heard again in the sequels Shaft’s Big Score! (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973) as well as the remake Shaft (2019). The original pic kicks into action when homeboy Bumpy (Moses Gunn) hires Shaft to find his kidnapped daughter from murdering mobsters. During his off time, the titular character is busy with a booty-load of foxy chicks. In fact, the R rated film features Camille Yarbrough, Gwenn Mitchell, and the naked flesh on Margaret Warncke. As lovely Linda, Ms. Warncke will have audience members warncking their members when they get to glance at her bare back as she steps into the shower. If that’s not arousing enough, the built brunette reveals her alabaster rack while making out with Mr. Roundtree. The brief scene is steamy enough to have you reaching for a towel! At the time of its release, movie critic Gene Siskel said the film “offers little more than a rousing opening fight and a chance to see Roundtree glower while he models some fancy leather outfits.” Oh, shut yo mouth!
