During his career as a motion picture director, cinematographer Nicolas Roeg, CBE influenced such filmmakers as Christopher Nolan, Danny Boyle and Steven Soderbergh. Often popping pop stars into lead roles, his groovy movies include Performance (1970) featuring Mick Jagger, The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) featuring David Bowie, and Bad Timing (1980) featuring Art Garfunkel as well as Theresa Russell. Yes, Roeg also cast skintastic actresses from Julie Christie in the thriller Don’t Look Now (1973) to Kelly Reilly in the chiller diller Puffball (2007). The latter title marks his final film and we can honestly say Sir Nic went out with a bang! This R rated mystery follows an ambitious architect named Liffey (Reilly) who moves to a spooky Irish valley to turn an old cottage into a sleek modern structure. But this means the building’s previous owner Molly (Rita Tushingham) is living in the forest. As such, she and her daughter Mabs (Miranda Richardson) dabble in black magic to reclaim their home. But just like an old episode of Bewitched (1964-1972), the spell gets out of control and, in this case, impregnates Liffey. This spoiler may spoil your trousers when you get a load of Liffey getting a load from Tucker (William Houston) when he f*cks her in the barn. In fact, we get to see Kelly’s perfect puffballs in the process! The film also features Donald Sutherland, Oscar Pearce, and the bare bum on Leona Igoe’s body double in the woods. Needless to say, you’ll be packing wood!
