Review

Carol White is the Poor Cow (1967) of the title, and she is udderly milkable. She has the big, soft and pendulous boobs of the British Empire, and may the sun never set on them. Hers is a sordid tale of South London life. With her bullying husband in jail, Carol turns to another loser criminal played by Terence Stamp. Their scenes were later sampled in Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey (1999). Director Ken Loach was more into the social realism of the story but was kind enough to add enough sexual material to keep crotches interested throughout. Carol makes love in the hay and poses topless for a seedy photographer. But the most shocking aspect of this slice-of-dirty-life film is the theme song, by minstrel Donovan. This mellow yellow makes everyone’s banana peel!
