Novocaine (2001)

The sad truth about junkies is that they will do anything to ensure their next fix. The silver lining to that dark cloud is that many narcotics addicts are women worth ogling, and the lengths they will go to for dope often entail disrobing. Such is the charm of a silly noir pastiche on the par of Novocaine (2001). A vehicle for Steve Martin’s comedic woebegone WASP persona, Novocaine smirks and sneers as Martin’s straightlaced dentist unfolds and crumbles once pill-popping, pulchritudinous pixie Helena Bonham Carter challenges his ethics and mores. Martin compromises all for the love of Helena, and all hell breaks loose.
