Pop singer Dobie Gray--most noted for his big ’70s hit “Drift Away”--also made a bid for a screen career. Few people know this, of course, because Gray was smart enough to use the name Clifton Brown when he signed up to star in the schlock classic Mean Mother (1973). He plays a Vietnam soldier who joins pal Dennis Saren in going AWOL to Europe. They then split up to get involved with the mob in, respectively, Spain and Rome. And that’s all before the plot starts to get complicated. At least this baffling thriller cuts to the chest when Gray uses a gat to get Robyn Hilton out of her bikini top. Veteran blaxploitation babe Marilyn Joi--billed here as Tracy King--also shows off her mean mothers while keeping them clean with showers and nude bathing.
