Set in 1930s France, Francis Girod’s star-studded character study Le Trio infernal (1974) has been compared to cinematic landmarks by Luis Buñuel and Roger Vadim. Arthouse veteran Michel Piccoli stars as George Sarret, an erotic schemer who manages the difficult trick of successfully bagging two sisters (Romy Schneider and Mascha Gonska). As if that’s not enough, the conniving cad also marries them off to graying lechers with deep pockets, then murders the poor husbands to share in the inheritances. It’s good work if you can get it, and the sisters’ willingness to serve as sex kittens only sweetens the deal. Both actresses unpeel their layers on a handful of occasions, and co-star Andréa Ferréol joins the dizzying fun in one superlative scene.
