Human relations between the genders are never as blatantly and manipulatively sexual as when presented in a French love farce. Adapted from a novel by Valdemar Lestienne, the alternately ludicrous and lubricious L'Amant de poche (1978) has the added frisson of starring an American-born actress in the lead role, which creates a mélange of intercontinental politics to accompany the tension of erotic diplomacy. With a cast list that includes not one but two gigolos, be aware that the affections being toyed with in L'Amant de poche will not always be what they seem.
