Nominated for Best Foreign Language Feature at the 2006 Academy Awards, the powerful wartime drama Joyeux Noël (2005) is based on a true story. Set at the height of WWI, the film chronicles the unique events of Christmas Eve, 1941, when soldiers on both sides of the Western Front called a twenty-four-hour truce in order to play a soccer game in No Man’s Land. Dramatic and inspiring, the fleeting event helped to illuminate for many the destructive fallacy of “the war to end all wars.” Soccer’s fun enough, of course, but a soldier played by Benno Furmann ends up savoring the best of all possible time-outs––a lustful evening with sexy Diane Kruger.
