Lanky indie film auteur Larry Fessenden wrote, edited, directed and starred in Habit (1997). Fessenden typically plays an intelligent but self-defeating Lower East Side struggler who is plagued by substance abuse and female troubles. Habit, a modern-day vampire parable set in the gritty bohemian nightclubs and walkups of New York City, gives Fessenden a chance to flex all his strengths. His character meets an unsettling and weird chick (Meredith Snaider) who draws him into an enervating state of queerly obsessive sex and addiction that can lead only to permanent loss of mind and soul. Habit is strange and appealing.
