A middle-aged family man makes a startling discovery that upends his life forever in the well-observed French drama Encore (1988). Jean-Louis Rolland stars as Louis, a married father who experiences a dawning realization that he’s a homosexual. He abruptly ditches his wife (Florence Giorgetti) and shacks up with a man, but the fissure causes him to go off the deep end. Throughout the course of his sexual crisis, Louis contemplates suicide, hustles for cash, and contracts AIDS. Director Paul Vecchiali is kind enough to levy his tragic tale with a bit of female skin, however, as Giorgetti brightens things up by unpeeling her layers.
