A headstrong young woman makes a series of sobering life decisions that enrage her father in the well-observed Kiwi family drama Broken English (1996). Aleksandra Vujcic stars as Jana, a Croatian refugee trying to forge a life for herself in Auckland. In order to escape the claustrophobic confines of her home, Jana forms a romantic attachment to a local Maori man (Julian Arahanga) and agrees to help a Chinese immigrant in exchange for cash. Naturally Jana’s actions anger her overprotective father (Rade Serbedzija), who refuses to sit idly by while his little girl becomes a full-fledged woman. There’s no stopping nature, however, and Vujcic’s exactly that as she treats her new boy toy to some frantic thrusting.
