Review

When a compassionate doctor’s controversial methods rankle the Canadian medical establishment, American bard Walt Whitman arrives to champion the man’s work in the tender period drama Beautiful Dreamers (1990). Rip Torn stars as the romantic writer whose snowy beard and darting eyes don’t quickly endear him to the doctor’s cranky superiors. Of course, what would a movie about Whitman be without a hint of the ribald? Wendel Meldrum sings the body electric in an alluring skinny-dipping scene that reveals the ravishing actress’s multitudes.
