Touki Bouki (1973) is not a response to the classic tune "Wooly Bully" by Sam Sham and the Pharaohs, but it can certainly be sung in place of that titular phrase if you so choose. The film comes to us from Senegal, made by filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambéty for a budget of only $30,000 during the African nation's cinematic boom time of the late 60s through the early 80s. The film centers around an affable cow herder named Mory (Magaye Niang), who spends his time tooling around the beach on his motorcycle, dreaming of the day when he can leave his lonely existence behind and make something of himself. One day he meets the equally charming Anta (Myriam Niang), who shares his dream of getting out of Senegal and making it in the big city of Paris! The only problem is that neither of them have the financial means to make those dreams a reality, until Mory stumbles upon an idea to swindle a local man who has a thing for him out of some money. Nothing goes according to plan, of course, which is how these sorts of deals usually go, but the film has a rhythm and a style all its own as it takes on a rather rote subject. The other major thing this flick has going for it is some terrific topless scenes from Myriam Niang! She spends a lot of time baring her breasts at the beach, dancing around, and even shucking her shirt in broad daylight to give us a look at her perfect pair! Touki Bouki will make you spew-ki!
