Review

Based on the 1920 French novel by Marcel Rouff, this food-centric film follows Dodin Bouffant (Benoît Magimel), a renowned chef in 1889, and his culinary partner Eugénie (Juliette Binoche). The two spend the bulk of the film’s beginning preparing a luxurious meal for a fancy guest with the help of two assistants, Violete (Galatéa Beluga) and her young niece, Pauline (Bonnie Chagneau-Ravoire). Eugénie is clearly the biggest talent in the kitchen and she recognizes Pauline’s extraordinary penchant for gastronomy. Dodin and Eugénie have been romantically involved for years, but every time he asks her to marry him, she declines, preferring to keep things as they are, but he persists, especially now that it appears that her health is failing. The beautiful Ms. Binoche is as brilliant as ever, but we suspect that she’s utilized a body double for her pair of butt-baring nude scenes. Still, it’s always nice to see some tasty tush, no matter who it is!
