Bette Midler solidified her star status in The Rose (1979), a sequined tragedy about a talented musician’s tumble from grace. Loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin, the intimate drama chronicles the destruction of rock siren Rose Foster, a Florida-bred talent whose astounding pipes aren’t enough to carry her through a gnawing addiction to booze and pills. Midler plays her part with gusto, and it’s hard not to dig the brassy dame during her showy sex scenes.
