Oliver Stone's The Hand (1981) stars Michael Caine as a cartoonist who's in the middle of a blow-out with the missus when a near smash-up with a big ol' truck severs his scribbling hand. Dammit, that hand came in handy! Now what's he going to do? Seeing as The Hand is a horror flick, what Mike does is descend into hand-to-hand combat with his psyche. Is he going mad, or are the drawings of the doodler who replaced him getting mysteriously defaced? And why is he having visions of his severed mitt getting its paws on things that don't belong to it? With his marriage falling apart, Mike moves off to the sticks to teach an art class and have a fling with a young thing named Stella (Annie McEnroe). Soon he's having blackouts in which he creates the kind of art he used to be able to make . . . and he doesn't have any knowledge of doing it! Concerned that he’s losing his grip on reality, Mike tries to get a handle on his life as the holidays, and a visit from the missus, approach. Chin up, Caine, at least it's not Palm Sunday!
