Lonely adolescent Homer (Tobey Maguire) is raised in an orphanage in 1940s St. Cloud, Maine, in The Cider House Rules (1999). Under the tutelage of director Dr. Larch (Michael Caine), he becomes a competent yet unlicensed physician assisting in medical procedures for locals. When visitors Wally (Paul Rudd) and his gorgeous girlfriend Candy (Charlize Theron) arrive to have an illegal abortion, Homer develops a bad taste for medicine and leaves Dr. Larch in a lurch by departing to live on the couple’s apple farm. Wally soon goes off to war, leaving Homer and his gal alone to rule their cider house. Will young Homer hit a homer with the dandy Candy, or will he return to fulfill the destiny that Dr. Larch has been planning for him all along?
