Next time you are flying into the United States from a foreign land or idling in your car headed Stateside at the Canadian or Mexican border, and your neighbors in the queue complain about the "unnecessary" delay, take it upon yourself to sing a tune of praise for the underappreciated and vital customs personnel. More movies should follow the lead of Point of Impact (1993) and elevate the taken-for-granted border grunt to the status of action-thriller hero. Customs officers have their partners killed by evildoers just like the more glamorous DEA agents do. And like their undercover narc counterparts, a customs professional has the guts to resign his position with the department and take a job as bodyguard to the scintillating and seductive girlfriend of a dope-smuggling master criminal. If that’s what it takes to infiltrate the nest of corruption and double dealing and make a diverting filmic entertainment, then our U.S. Department of Customs is up to the task.
