From the director of Women in Love (1969), The Devils (1971) and Tommy (1975) comes the surreal biopic Lisztomania (1975). Britain’s bawdy filmmaker Ken Russell brings the life of 19th century composer Franz Liszt to the screen with bravado, balls and a bevy of naked babes! Loosely based on Marie d’Agoult’s 1848 book Nélida, the R-rated flick follows the trysts of Liszt (Roger Daltrey). Since the musical virtuoso was perhaps the most sought-out master of the eighty-eight notes ever to run a scale, masses of teenage fans were after Franz. As such, the local press took to terming the hysterical mobs of girl frenzy as mania. The word would be resurrected 100+ years later when The Fab Four ignited Beatlemania in the States during the 1960s. But back in Europe, Franz was having fun with historic hotties who include Princess Carolyn (Sara Kestelman), Cosima Wagner (Veronica Quilligan), George Sand (Imogen Claire), and a topless Lola Montez (Anulka Dziubinska). If that’s not titillating enough, Olga Janina (Nell Campbell) looks bemused while sipping booze and showing her boobs to the Pope (Ringo Starr). Breast of all, Marie d’Agoult (Fiona Lewis) repeatedly reveals her rack as she jumps in and out of bed with the famed composer of the Romantic Period. Perhaps that’s why women, in general, gravitate to piano players — intuiting that the hands of music men have an uncanny touch for female skin thanks to all that practice tickling the ivories. Or maybe ladies just want to get banged like a piano!
