Review
Set sometime in the 1950s, Herzlich willkommen (1990) tells the story of Friedrich, a refugee from East Germany who finds employment in a castle that is actually a school for delinquent children. Far from improving Friedrich’s circumstances, however, his new job proves to be fraught with unhappiness, if not outright peril. It seems that the headmaster is a former Nazi and he, along with a few school punks, rules the castle with an iron fist. Friedrich does find some happiness, though, with one of his fellow school teachers. Don’t miss Barbara Auer’s perfect pontoons as she gets nailed on her school desk.
