¿Bin ich schön? (1998)

Notable female filmmaker Doris Dörrie caused a splash at international film festivals with her virtuoso ensemble drama ¿Bin ich schön? (1998). Likened to the films of Robert Altman for its intricately overlapping dialogue, Dörrie’s film describes the broken hearts and thwarted dreams of a large cast of characters whose lives intersect in mysterious ways. From a deaf-mute woman in need of help to a German man who begs for a bit of S&M, Dörrie’s characters are oddly fascinating--none more so, in fact, than Run Lola Run (1998) phenom Franka Potente, who shows off her fabulous pair during a dalliance with an older man. Co-stars Anica Dobra, Heike Makatsch, and Elisabeth Romano keep it clean but compelling in their non-nude turns.
