Golden Door (2006)

It's 1913 in Sicily, and the Mancuso family is living in poverty in Golden Door (2006), Emanuele Crialese's historical drama about huddled masses heading for New York. Though the fam has lived in the same village for generations, they're entranced by a visitor's descriptions of America, where the streets are lined with solid gold and each citizen is issued a unicorn. Or something like that—what matters is that the United States sounds like a real gas, so Old Man Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) packs up his brood and hits the high seas for NYC. It's a tough trip, and once they get there things get even tougher as they struggle to fit in. The one sweet spot is Charlotte Gainsbourg, whom lucky Vinny gets to marry.
