A distraught mother examines the reasons why her daughter may have elected to take her own life in the stormy Spanish drama Esposa y amante (1976). When Luisa (Concha Velasco) learns that her daughter (Victoria Abril) has been admitted for emergency care, she rushes to the hospital to discover her alive but ailing. Taken by surprise by her daughter’s desperate act, Luisa racks her memory for incidents in their life when her daughter seemed particularly distraught. Of course, it’s possible that Luisa was too busy screwing a revolving cast of suitors to notice her daughter’s worsening mental health. There’s plenty of pleasing evidence that Velasco’s character has trouble keeping her raging libido in check.
