Most people who believe in hell are quite certain that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler occupies an eternal suite there. The unsparingly grim, German-made Downfall (2004) indicates that perhaps doddering Adolf had taken up residence in Hades before he’d even died, a fitting if insufficient punishment since he’d created a living damnation for so many millions of innocent souls. Tremendously acted, realized in harrowing and exacting detail, Downfall depicts the Führer’s last days within his fortified bunker under Berlin. The Russians are closing in on the ground. Americans and British are bombarding from the air. And the Devil himself is coming up from below to claim one of his own.
