XCU: Extreme Close Up (2001)

Just one year after the first season of Survivor took America by storm, horror maven Sean S. Cunningham sets his sinister gaze upon reality television in XCU: Extreme Close Up (2001). Yes, the director of the original Friday the 13th (1980) was so terrified of the wannabe famous "reality stars" and the lengths that producers will exploit them for viewers, that he made a whole film about it. And since it was the early 2000's, he did the whole X for Xtreme thing. Cannily casting veteran actors and grown-up child stars along the lines of C. Thomas Howell, Scrubs's Sarah Chalke, and Danica McKellar (the once and forever Winnie Cooper of The Wonder Years), XCU excoriates the narcissism of reality TV's producers, performers, and audiences with biting satire and terrifying jolts. Best known for voicing a bunch of characters in animated Disney movies, Susan Egan plays Karen Webber, the cuthroat TV producer known for pumping out hit shows. But as much of a hit as her show, XCU is, the throat slitting is becoming a problem. Namely, that we mean that literally, as someone keeps killing off her show's stars. Of course, since if it bleeds it leads Karen sees this as an opportunity to create the most exciting show ever put on screen, while her reality stars are just looking to survive. Not quite completely found footage, the fake reality show aspect added a then novel twist on the slasher flick, though we've seen it used a ton of times in the decades since. But since we don't care about new ideas as much as nude babes, Mr. Cunningham was kind enough to film the mams! We get a trio of titty baring ladies in this one, with Elina McCormick, Essence Atkins, and Careena Melia all flashing their funbags in three unique scenes. Ms. Producer, those bodies are ready for their close ups! Hey ladies, you sure look good when we see you in XCU!
