When We Rise, the ABC mini-series from Milk writer Dustin Lance Black, follows the LGBTQ rights movement beginning with the Stonewall riots in the late 1960s and moves all the way to marriage equality in 2015. Much of the action takes place in San Francisco, a particularly liberated community that harbored a sense of belonging for LGBTQ folks back in the day, and it incorporates a sense of intersectionality. It was one thing to be gay in the 70s, for example, but what happens if that gay man was also black and had to contend with racism to boot? It's a powerful show for sure, and it incorporates a gratifying amount of Sapphic sex, with Emily Skeggs and Caitlin Gerard getting in on and Emily making out with Fiona Dourif. This will get a rise out of you in the best possible way!
