Review

Nancy (Sydne Rome) is a sweet hitchhiker exploring Italy, who almost gets molested at the beginning of the sex comedy What? (1972). But that's only the beginning of her misadventures in this sexually explicit re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland from the warped mind of Polish pervert Roman Polanski. Played off as a joke (What? the eff?), Nancy escapes the randy advances of the demented driver who won't take no for an answer, only to land in the even kinkier hands of ex-pimp rumored to be both gay and suffering from Syphillis, Alex (Marcello Mastroianni), in his giant mansion. Thanks to the work of a sort of Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Sydne loses her shirt and has to dump em out for most of the movie. From there, it's a bit of a sketch comedy, with Sydne getting painted by the maintenance man, the dog trying to hump her, and an English gent trying to eat her out as she snoozes. Polanski even appears as a a horny Scuba diver known as "Mosquito" for constantly using his big stinger. Critics loathed this one, but since he'd made Rosemary's Baby (1968) a few years before and would make Chinatown (1974) two years after, it didn't kill his career. What did, and what makes What? a tough watch were the sex crimes he's been accused of over the years. But if you can keep those out of your head, you'll enjoy the running gag of Sydne's clothes getting torn off all the time. Miss Rome shows all three B's while getting undressed for bed, while getting out of the shower, while showing a dude her tits, and while fighting with a dog who keeps stealing her clothes. That's What's up!
