Some people, such as the hitman played by Charles Bronson in Violent City (1970), are just not joiners. Independent to the point of bullheadedness, Bronson’s slick and stoic professional killer comes out of the joint after doing a stint, anticipating a wet, warm homecoming in New Orleans from hot, saucy Jill Ireland in the guise of his foxy girlfriend. A proud loner, Bronson has steadfastly refused to be coopted by the reigning crime syndicates, and the boss of the local mob, Telly Savalas, has a bitter surprise for the freshly freed killer. During Bronson’s incarceration, Ireland has become Savalas’s lawfully bedded wife. Bronson’s murderous impulses hit the fan.
