The gorgeous German production Tuvalu (1999) looks like a film straight from the 1920s, with a plot to match. Chulpan Khamatova stars as the obsession of a young man who runs his father’s ancient bathhouse. He lets Chulpan stay there for free with her father, only to have her seek revenge on him after her dad’s killed by a falling piece of ceiling. The poor sap has to deal with both her and some evil men who want to shut down the bathhouse. This silent film is full of amazing visuals that redeem all of the old-fashioned melodrama. However, Chulpan’s frequently nude bod remains absolutely timeless.
