The Zone (2011)

It’s easy to crank out a bunch of movies within one year when they offer improvised lines and not a lot of plot. In 2011, filmmaker Joe Swanberg released Autoerotic, Art History, Caitlin Plays Herself, Silver Bullets, Uncle Kent, and The Zone. Like the low-budget Art History, the latter pic centers around a film within a film — as well as nudity! Yes, what this mumblecore flick lacks in story (or even fictional character names), it makes up for in softcore action! This time around, the drama features Sophia Takal as Sophia, Lawrence Michael Levine as Larry, and Kate Lyn Sheil as Kate. The movie also includes Adam Wingard, Kris Swanberg, Dustin Guy Defa, and the film’s director Joe Swanberg as a film director. Here’s the setup: an engaged couple share a Brooklyn apartment with a female roommate. Everything is going swell until a mysterious visitor shows up to spend the night. Over the course of the evening, the uninvited guest sleeps with all three of the residents. Needless to say, this results in much consternation for the characters and views of nude boobs for the rest of us! Just 8 minutes into the movie, Kate flashes her rack. Soon after, she goes full frontal in the shower. The same can be said of Sophia who, in another scene, appears bottomless as she shares her top with a guy. Interesting fashion choice! Breast of all is a ménage à trois wherein the ladies reveal their chests and same-sex preferences. Ooh la la!
