Fast-paced, dizzyingly fun, and stocked with references to everything from Touch of Evil (1958) to The Bicycle Thief (1948), Robert Altman’s The Player (1992) is a terrific satire about the wicked ways of Hollywood. When smooth-talking studio exec Griffin Mill (Tim Robbins) angers a struggling writer, the two enter into a cat-and-mouse game that draws the former into a most unfortunate criminal mistake. Stocked with inside jokes and celebrity cameos, Altman’s ‘90s masterpiece also features a smoldering love scene between Robbins and Cynthia Stevenson. Susan Sarandon couldn’t have been very happy to see her lucky life-mate getting down and dirty with the brunette in a hot tub.
