Before all sorts of psychological thrillers and elevated horror flicks decided that ballet academies were some of the most cutthroat, competitive, and intensely creepy places on earth, the Italian flick Suspiria (1977) essentially created the genre with its (literally) colorful tale of a sinister school for dancers. When American student Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) arrives at a famed German ballet academy in the middle of a dark and stormy night, she sees another student (Eva Axen) running away - a student that immediately ends up murdered. Looks like a spot just opened up for Suzy! When she enrolls at the academy, a whole bunch of weird stuff starts happening, like Suzy getting moved to a dorm against her will for some reason, drugged with tainted wine, and the ongoing presence of maggots living in the ceiling and walls. Basically, the place is super sus. Suzy and roommate Sara (Stefania Casini) go swimming for a bit before Sara goes missing, too, and Suzy has to figure out what the hell is going on. Ends up, this ballet school is secretly home to a coven of witches that use their sexy young students as human sacrifices. There's better skin in the 2018 remake, but Dario Argentos' original vibrant palleted giallo flick will always be the one most worth watching. Since the script originally called for all the girls to be preteens, it makes sense that there's no nudity. But that doesn't mean there's nothing for your weenie. After all, we do get to see Stefania Casini and Jessica Harper showing their ballet toned bodies in bathing suits. Susanna Javicoli, another student, shows pokies in a robe as well, but there is more blood than skin in this film! Still, if ballerinas tickle your balls, we suspect you'll love Suspiria!
