Filmmaker Leander Haußmann hammers home the absurdity of arbitrarily dividing Germany between East and West in Sonnenallee (1999), an adaptation of a popular novel by Thomas Brussig. Made more than a decade after the demolition of the Berlin Wall, the film follows the trials and travails of a group of teens unfortunate enough to grow up on the wrong (i.e., east) side of a border checkpoint. Heroines Annika Kuhl, Elena Meißner, and Teresa Weissbach do manage to make the most of their drab, Soviet-bloc surroundings, however--all three babes experiment with their blossoming sex drives to the delight of some lucky schoolboys.
